By: Jackson | January 28th, 2009Rotterdam native Mario Been, presently in charge of NEC Nijmegen has been announced as the new coach for Feyenoord starting this July 1, signing a three year contract.
Upon signing he said:
“I’m not a magician, but I want to build something beautiful in these three years,” said Been. “I’m proud to have been allowed to become Feyenoord coach and I want the players to show pride that they are allowed to play for Feyenoord.
“Everyone knows that Feyenoord is my club and that I have always dreamed of returning to De Kuip as coach. Besides that, I am glad as now I will be able to totally focus at my job at NEC again, starting with the match against Feyenoord next weekend.”
General manager Eric Gudde commented of the new leader:
“From the very start, both parties had the desire to work something out together and we managed to do that in record tempo. We are delighted that Mario Been is our new head coach. He knows better than anyone how this club works and, in addition, over the past few years he has developed into an outstanding coach who is able to get the most out of a squad.”

He’s done well in his short time at NEC. Hopefully he can bring about a bit of a resurgence.
I think it’s a good move to get this sorted and out of the way. Now we can focus solely on qualifying for a Eur . . . err, staying out of the relegation places.

Great news! Been is a good coach for Feyenoord. Down to earth, lots of humour and typical Rotterdam style work ethics. He will be revered by the fans and starts with lots of credit. The next one to sign on will be Beenhakker. Rumors say that he’s willing to come, but doesn’t want to publish it yet due to his Polish chores.
Vlemmings will stay on too, which is good too, me thinks. With Been and Beenhakker (sic), sponsors will come and hopefully some youthful NEC players will make the move.
Look at AZ, last season and this season. I feel it’s only upwards now for Feyenoord! Here’s hoping that Biseswar will stay!

Apparently, Mario wants Pierre van Hooijdonk as assistant and Ben Wijnstekers as team manager…
