Feyenoord loses 2-1 to Volendam

By: Jackson | April 5th, 2009

After last weeks remarkable performance against Eredivisie leaders AZ, Feyenoord’s five match unbeaten streak came to an end losing 2-1 to FC Volendam. The loss was costly to de Rotterdammers as it leaves them four points shy of a Europa League playoff spot with only five remaining weeks.

Leon Vlemmings side were efficient in their play in the first forty-five minutes, not letting Volendam threaten Henk Timmer once and owning the attacking aspect of the match. Five minutes in Diego Biseswar attempt hammered off the bar but at then tenth minute veteran Roy Makaay made it 1-0, his 300th goal in club play. Continuing to direct play Feyenoord was close to adding to the lead when Makaay provided Georginio Wijnaldum the ball but once again the post was Volendam ‘keeper Jeroen Verhoeven best friend and it hammered off it. The second half was completely different as Volendam needing to fight out of the drop zone, came out with a fierce attitude. A poor clearance attempt by Giovanni van Bronckhorst lead to ball coming to Dominique van Dijk and after fighting off Feyenoord defenders he pounded the ball into the net. Sensing three points, the hosts had Feyenoord on their heels as the match opened up tactically. After both sides missed chances, van Dijk found the winner with eight minutes remaining with a surging run that he finished with a drive to the back of the net. The match was far from over as Diego Biseswar found the goalpost again as Feyenoord unsuccessfully looked to level but it wasn’t their day and the match ended 2-1.

What a disastrous result! This doesn’t bode well. The chance to close the gap with NEC and Utrecht. They should have eaten the grass! how can you play 1-1 against AZ and lose against this bunch!!! Very very disappointing….

    visitors?

I’m not sure what to say because I’m actually stunned that someone commented and thank you for tripling my monthly visits – jajaja

Disappointing loss but being honest I like the spirit of the club and what Leon Vlemmings brings. I know there are big plans and announcements coming but he’s done a good job.

I agree… I have high hopes for Feyenoord. The problem is that financially it’s not going too well and the investors seem to be playing games. They should never have kicked Herik out! What a shame. The youth is great at Feyenoord and there are some tremendous youth coaches at work. But if all goes well, a new stadium in the future, income from some smart transfers (Wijnaldum, De Guzman, Biseswar) will all leave in the next two years, I’d say and the capable hands of Been and -hakker… I can see Feyenoord come back to the top!

The financial situation is very bad, something I’d rather not focus on because it runs so deep. However I’m really positive of the future and been pleased with Leon Vlemmings.

Just writing up the review now – what a win!
