By: Jackson | February 8th, 2009
Although playing a man down for more than half the match Feyenoord held Groningen to a scoreless draw today at De Kuip. While Het Legioen was disappointed with the result, it appears that Leon Vlemmings has stemmed the tide and now the club can begin to move in the right direction as before Norichio Nieveld red-card three minutes before the break Feyenoord frustrated Groningen’s European hopes.
Feyenoord’s first big chance came in the middle of the first half as André Bahia played Roy Makaay through in alone on the Groningen goalkeeper Luciano but he could not beat him. Makaay had another opportunity very quickly when he got on the end of Jon Dahl Tomasson free-kick but it went wide. Couple in André Bahia goal bound header that was cleared off the line, Feyenoord was well on the patch towards breaking open the match before Norichio Nieveld was sent off for a bad challenge.
At the restart Dwight Tiendalli was brought in for Andwélé Slory in an effort to control the oppositions man advantage and in the overall scheme of the match they still were the aggressor. Groningen’s limited chances were held back by in-form Henk Timmer and Diego Biseswar had a perfect opportunity to win the match with ten minutes remaining as he was in alone on Luciano but once again it was a day for goalkeepers and the match ended without a score.
