Feyenoord drop close match to PSV
By: Jackson | December 23rd, 2008
Feyenoord’s four match win-less streak continued with a 1-0 loss to PSV. Until the winning strike late in the match, Gertjan Verbeek appeared to have deployed a perfect strategy and it was Feyenoord in-fact who appeared to be closer to finding the golden goal. However with twelve minutes remaining Ibrahim Afellay got on the end of an attempted clearance by Dwight Tiendalli and volleyed the ball into the net. The match started poorly for Feyenoord as they lost ‘keeper Henk Timmer to a injury warming up and were forced to deputize Rob van Dijk for service, however he did a superb job between the pipes.
For the most part the first half went without major incident, partially because of disciplined midfield play but equally the lack of creative inspiration in the attack. Feyenoord will rue missed opportunities though including Timothy Derijck’s through ball to Roy Makaay that could have easily been a winning goal but unfortunately he couldn’t get a good shot off as his first touch led him off-balance. As the match progressed, Phillips Stadion appeared uncomfortable as Feyenoord were clearly growing in confidence and playing with greater assertiveness.
At the eightieth minute Diego Biseswar returned from injury as he replaced Georginio Wijnaldum and immediately picked-up overall tempo of the match. While missing a close chance his return certainly will have Het Legioen optimistic. However disaster struck with twelve minutes left with Ibrahim Afellay’s goal to give PSV the 1-0 lead. While Gertjan Verbeek adjusted the attack to find the equalizer, it could not be found and Feyenoord took the loss.
